Testing (In accordance with API Specification 16A, for Drill Through Equipment)

Pressure Testing the Annular Packing Unit

Stage 1:  Closure with pipe: 3-1/2” test pipe is to be used on 9” and smaller bore units, 5” test pipe on 11” bore units.  Once the appropriate test pipe is secured in the BOP bore, apply 1,200 to 1,400 psi closure pressure to the packing element.  Bring annular pressure (below the packing element) up to the rated working pressure of the BOP.  If the unit leaks, relieve all pressure and restart the test with 200-400 psi more closure pressure. Repeat, as necessary until there is no visible evidence of leakage for 5 minutes.

Stage 2: Closure without pipe:  Relieve all pressure and remove the test pipe from the bore of the BOP.  Apply 1,200 to 1,400 psi closure pressure to the packing element.  Then bring annular pressure (below the packing element) to 50% of the rated working pressure of the BOP.  If the unit leaks, relieve all pressure and restart the test with 200-400 psi more closure pressure. Repeat, as necessary until there is no visible evidence of leakage for 5 minutes.

CAUTION!!  Do not exceed the rated working pressure of the BOP.  Product damage or serious injury could result.
